SAD Lights shown to be effective treatment for bipolar depression

A recent study at Northwestern University has shown that Daily  mid day use of bright light therapy can effectively treat bipolar disorder. Importantly, the therapy did not exacerbate mania associated with the disorder. Past attempts to use bright light therapy each morning (the protocol for treating SAD) did induce mania. Though the reasons are unknown, using the light therapy at mid-day was effective without the side effect of producing mania. The study was published Oct. 3 in the American Journal of Psychiatry

Light Therapy best started now

The autumnal equinox will occur in just a couple of days, September 22, 2017. Every year around this time i start using my light box to ease my symptoms of seasonal depression. My body tells me that it is time to start. I start sleeping more than normal, craving sweets and needing more coffee to stay alert. 
I am one of the lucky ones who gets immediate relief from using a light box. Everybody is different and you really don't know how much benefit you will get until you give it a try.

Lightbox does not afffect level of vitamin D

A common misconception is that a SAD light box works by raising your vitamin D level. This is not the case. A light box blocks out UV light like a good pair of sunglasses. Vitamin D levels increase with skin exposure to UV light. A SAD light works by exposing the eyes to non-UV light of sufficient intensity to cause a decrease in melatonin and an increase in serotonin.
Maintaining vitamin D levels can elevate mood but a SAD light will not serve this purpose.


30% of Seattlites affected by shortening days

Here are some interesting statistics. The incidence of Seasonal Affective Disorder in Seattle is 10%. Another 20% are affected negatively, though not clinically depressed. They experience lethargy, need for more sleep, carbohydrate craving and weight gain. Both groups benefit from daily use of a light box.
