SAD Lights shown to be effective treatment for bipolar depression

A recent study at Northwestern University has shown that Daily  mid day use of bright light therapy can effectively treat bipolar disorder. Importantly, the therapy did not exacerbate mania associated with the disorder. Past attempts to use bright light therapy each morning (the protocol for treating SAD) did induce mania. Though the reasons are unknown, using the light therapy at mid-day was effective without the side effect of producing mania. The study was published Oct. 3 in the American Journal of Psychiatry

I have been using my light box for 15 years now to ease my winter depression (S.A.D.). A few years ago I realized that I benefited from using my light box year round, even through the summer months. Many people who have SAD also experience a some level of depression year round. 
A recent scientific study confirmed the benefits of Light Therapy for non-seasonal depression. The Study was  published online in JAMA Psychiatry.
